During the construction of the TerraSud Costanera Building in San Pedro de la Paz, we faced one of the most common challenges of urban engineering: how to execute a deep excavation while minimizing its impact on the surrounding community.
With a total excavation depth of nearly 10 meters, the project required not only effective technical solutions but also logistical decisions that respected the surrounding environment, project schedule, and quality of life of nearby residents.
Logistics in confined urban areas

These challenges become even more critical in established residential neighborhoods with high population density.
During the final stage of excavation, direct loading of excavated material into trucks from the bottom of the excavation became impractical. Maintaining a continuous flow of heavy equipment entering and leaving the site would also have increased traffic disruption and reduced safety for the surrounding community.
The solution: A conveyor belt for deep excavations
To address these challenges, Pangea Geotecnia implemented a continuous conveyor belt system, allowing excavated material to be transported directly from the bottom of the excavation to the edge of the site, where it was loaded onto trucks for final disposal.
This strategy provided several important benefits:
- Reduced noise and vibration in the surrounding area.
- Minimized heavy equipment traffic through residential streets.
- Improved operational safety by separating excavators from haul trucks.
- Maintained continuous excavation activities without interruptions, even during sensitive working hours.
- Strengthened the relationship with nearby residents and the local community.
