Soil nailing in Yobilo: slope stabilization under challenging ground conditions

In the municipality of Coronel, specifically in the Yobilo area, we are carrying out a slope stabilization project on a hillside with an inclination of nearly 70°. Known as the Don Miguel Project, the work addresses a localized slope failure that required a permanent and technically robust stabilization solution.

The methodology adopted for this project is soil nailing, a technique that stabilizes soil masses through the installation of self-drilling anchors, which are progressively installed as excavation advances.

For this project, the slope is being reinforced in stages, working level by level to achieve a stable retaining system without compromising the integrity of the hillside.

From the first excavation stage, drilling locations were established in accordance with the project design. Galvanized self-drilling anchors were installed—as required for a permanent retaining structure—with simultaneous grout injection to provide adequate bond and effective ground reinforcement. As work progresses to the second level, additional rows of anchors are installed together with slope trimming and reinforcement mesh, followed by the application of shotcrete, which in this project has a final design thickness of 250 mm.

Projects such as this allow us to address challenging ground conditions directly in the field, adapting our construction methods to the actual behavior of the ground while delivering a stable and durable solution.
