Innovation in Geotechnical Characterization: Discover How Pangea Geotechnia Is Transforming the Industry

As part of PANAMGEO 2024, Rafael Martínez, General Manager of Pangea Geotecnia, presented the research project "Innovation in geotechnical characterization using artificial intelligence and pressuremeter testing."

During his presentation, he shared the results of a collaborative research project between the University of Concepción and Pangea Geotecnia, highlighting new possibilities for the characterization and analysis of complex ground conditions.

For those who were unable to attend, we have prepared this summary of the presentation's key points. We have also included the audio recording so you can hear the full presentation directly from our General Manager.

Why pressuremeter testing? Pressuremeter testing is a key tool for Chilean ground conditions.

In Chile, the hardness of the ground and the large particle sizes commonly encountered can limit the effectiveness of traditional investigation methods such as the SPT and CPT. For this reason, we use high-resolution pressuremeter testing, which mobilizes a larger volume of soil and provides more representative results.

This technology offers approximately 400 times higher resolution than conventional methods, allowing stress–strain curves to be interpreted using a fundamental mechanics-based approach—an approach that is unique for this type of testing. resolución 400 veces superior a la de los métodos convencionales, permitiendo interpretar curvas tensión-deformación con un enfoque fundamental, algo único en este tipo de ensayos.

Artificial intelligence as a strategic tool

Through a collaboration with a company based in Barcelona, we have incorporated DAARWIN, software that uses artificial intelligence to accelerate and improve the interpretation of geotechnical data. The system reduces the analysis time from approximately three weeks to just two hours, making advanced interpretation practical for commercial projects.

This methodology has already been validated on real structures, including retaining walls and buildings, achieving deformation prediction errors of approximately one millimetre. un milímetro.

Resolviendo desafíos históricos

Pressuremeter testing has historically been questioned because of the potential disturbance caused during probe installation. However, our team has developed a methodology that minimizes this effect and provides reliable results. Recent research supports this approach, demonstrating that pressuremeter testing can be a dependable and effective tool, even in complex ground conditions.
